Josephine Lucy Holland and Mabel Lloyd Hayward

Jo, when she was about 5 years old.
Josephine attended Knightwick School, which opened in 1888 and closed down in 1959. In July 2005, Jo came to Knightwick to attend a reunion of old Knightwick School pupils, which was organised by her friend Geraldine (Chaplin) Cooper and over 60 former pupils attended.
Josephine had written a poem especially for that day, which she named 'The Saga of Knightwick School' and you can see this poem by visiting the Knightwick pages of this site. Or follow this link

Josephine used to have hair in pigtail plaits and one of her stories is that one morning as her mother was plating her hair, she told her that she hated having them as the children at school kept on pulling them and so in an instant mum cut both her pigtails off with a pair of scissors and said right that will stop them!!

I guess that Jo would now have been at the Girls Grammar School in Worcester, which she went to after finishing at Knightwick. Jo and others from the village, including her brother Graham used to travel to Worcester on the Blue Bus. Josephine did very well at the Grammar School and went on to University in London afterwards to train as a teacher. and then to teach in Leicester.
Then Josephine wanted to try something else and applied for the post of English Teacher in Denmark. Her application was accepted and this was how she met her future husband Gunvald Stenersen as he too moved from his country Norway to Denmark to study Civil Engineering and they both finished up living at the same student accomodation, the rest is history.

See Jo in a school photo at Worcester Grammar School for Girls in July 1955.
