Norah Mary (Hayward) Roberts was working as a bus conductress for Birmingham City Transport in 1944. Above you can see her in her uniform and below is her registration card and you can see that Norah was living at 103 High Street, Birmingham and the official date stamp says 24th January 1944.

In 1940 a bus conductresses wage was about 9d an hour, [240 pennies in a pound then] so for a 54 hour week that would be £2

During the second word war many men were in the forces and a job that had once been mainly male orientated was open for women to do. Petrol was rationed then and many car drivers could not get it so buses, trams and trains were the only viable means of transport.

The date on Norah's registartion card is when Norah was five months pregnant; and her son, Raymond Roberts was born, Saturday 27th May, 1944.
