The Laurels, Ankerdine

The Laurels, Ankerdine

The Laurels, was where Philip and Eliza Grubham lived. It is set at the top of Ankerdine Hill, Knightwick, Worcestershire and is across the road from Haywood Cottage, seen below. I went there with my son Alex in August 2002 and it doesn't seem to have changed at all, and still has the distinctive front porch with latticed sides and a lead roof, that can often be seen in photographs of the family. This photo is old and probably dates back to the end of the 1800's or early 1900's. In the Knightwick Church data of births it only mentions Ankerdine Hill as where Philip and Eliza lived, but I feel sure that it was probably here. It also has Philip Grubham down as a bricklayer. Philip was also the Parish Clerk at Knightwick.

My son, Alex James Edward Holland at the front of the Laurels, in August 2002.

Fanny Berry, Haywood Cottage

Haywood Cottage (1960). Probably belonged to the Grubhams' possibly to Eliza's sister Fanny Berry who would have been Lucy's (my Grandmother's) Aunt. The house came to the family and Grandfather, John William Jones, lived there after his wife Lucy died and after he had remarried to Mary Doman. John died 9th December, 1956, (aged 79) and when this photo was taken Mary still lived there. She later sold the house and moved with a friend to a seaside resort. The name has been changed since and it is now called Haywood House and has been extended.

Here is an old photo (circa 1900) with Fanny Berry standing at the front door of Haywood Cottage.

Fanny Berry was living at Gold Hill when she died in 1939 (aged 91). She was buried at Knightwick on the 6th February, 1939, Rector, J. R. Burns.

Gold Hill was where her nephew James Grubham and wife Emily Grubham lived.
