Charles Hayward - Photo Ai

Today it is called Pullens Farm and can be found on the B4220 Bromyard Road from Ridgeway Cross.

The following is supposition, but it looks like he died at the place he was working at.

The Cause of Death: Charles Hayward may have been killed while operating or working alongside agricultural machinery on the farm. In the 1920s, the widespread adoption of mechanised farming—such as steam-driven threshing machines, tractors, and heavy milling gear—led to a sharp rise in severe injuries among agricultural laborers who were transitioning away from traditional hand-tool farming.

The Location: The term "Pullens Pitt" likely refers to an old quarry hole, a marl pit (used for digging clay to fertilise fields), or a silage/manure pit located on the Pullens Farm estate where the heavy machinery or work was positioned at the time.

Here are Doris & Mabel with Lucy (Grubham) Jones. Their aunty Lucy was married to their mother's brother John William Jones, who at this time was the sub-postmaster at Knightwick Post Office. John & Lucy looked after Doris & Mabel (Probably after the death of their father, and to help out their mother who would have been struggling on her own with three girls) Their eldest sister Norah stayed with her mother, who later married again. Doris & Mabel both lived at the Post Office, Knightwick, with their uncle and aunty until they married their respective spouses. [John & Lucy Jones were my grandparents] Photograph Ai from Black & White.

We have been to Wold Cottage, a new house is now standing where two cottages once stood. Mabel's other sister Norah stayed with her mother and step-father.

Fanny May's daughter Norah had this one in a collection of photos that her son Ray Roberts now has. It was one of many photos I took when visiting him in 2022.

This photo was so damaged that I never thought anything could ever be done with it but I took a photo anyway. On the back it was dated 1931.

So this was probably the only photo ever taken of Josephine Petty
Born: 25th September, 1931.
Died: 22nd December, 1931.

I put the photo on an Ai site and was amazed by this result.

Because Fanny's second husband George Petty had already died, I think her brother, my grandfather John William Jones brought her back to his village from where she was living near Droitwich, and had her intered at Knightwick. Unfortunately there is no grave stone, but you can see the burial page which tells of her aged 60 and living at 5 Hanbury Wharf, Hanbury. She was buried on the 21st October, 1947, by Ernest Stanley Bartlett, Rector of Suckley.
