United Parish Magazine, Broadwas, September 1916:
It is with much regret that we have to record the death of Benjamin Guise who fell in action on July 1st
somewhere in France. This makes the third hero from Broadwas who has laid down his life for his
King and Country. We offer our deep sympathy with his family. May god comfort them, and may the
thought of his glorious death sustain them in the hour of their affliction.

Battle of the Somme

Honi soit qui mal y pense
"shamed be whoever
thinks ill of it"

1 July 1916: The Bloodiest Day in British Military History

On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, well over 100,000 men went over the top.
We'll never know the full total of men who went into battle, because not every battalion
recorded their strengths when they went into action. But there were 57,000 casualties
on 1 July 1916 – a figure that included the killed, wounded and missing.
Of this 57,000, 20,000 were either killed in action or died of wounds.
