In this photo my grandfather John William Jones is in the Royal Airforce, he is sat on the far right, with corporal stripes.. He was transferred there on the 1st April 1918 from the Royal Flying Corps. Photo would have been taken between then and his discharge on the 31st July 1919.

The Royal Air Force was formed on the 1st of April 1918 by combining the Royal Naval Air Service with the Royal Flying Corps. The Women's service the WRAF was formed at the same time. Unlike their sisters in the WAAC and the WRNS, the newly formed WRAF was utilised for home service but no WRAF women were sent abroad.
