Artist: Richard Sefton (1935/36–2008), a renowned sculptor also known for his work on
the famous war horse, Sefton.
Subject: Henry Freeman (1835–1904), Whitby's legendary lifeboatman and the sole survivor
of the 1861 lifeboat disaster.
Design: The bust was based on a famous photograph by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe,
depicting Freeman in his iconic cork lifejacket.
Location: Installed on the wall of the RNLI Whitby Lifeboat Station on Brewster Lane.
The bronze bust by Richard Sefton was officially unveiled on 19th September, 2007, by the Duchess of Kent.
