HM Submarine D5 hit a British mine and sunk on 3rd November 1914 as she responded to a German attack on Great Yarmouth. There were only 5 survivors. Berrow’s Worcester Journal, 7th November 1914: CASUALTIES OF SUBMARINE D5. Local Officer Lost. The Secretary of the Admiralty regrets to announce that the following officer, petty officers, and men have, it is feared lost their lives owing to the sinking of H.M. Submarine D 5 by a mine on the 3rd inst.:- OFFICERS. Brodie, Lieut. D. F. O’C., R.N. Lieut. Brodie was the second son of Capt. Brodie of Broadwas Court. It bears the following inscription “In loving memory of Donald Francis O’Callaghan Brodie, Lieutenant Royal Navy. The beloved son of Nora and Edgar Brodie, Broadwas Court. Who died for his Country in action on the North Sea, 3rd November, 1914 R.I.P.”
