Broadwas Church - Cross

Churchyard cross. Probably 15th century and restored in 1900. Sandstone ashlar, with Square base on 3 steps. The base has an arched niche on its south side, which is a common local feature, and bevelled upper edges forming an octagonal top. Octagonal shaft with a bevelled square base and a moulded capital supporting the cross. The base and base of the shaft are medieval. It was restored as a war memorial with the addition of the 3 steps and a renewed cross head.

The inscription reads:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF ELIZABETH AGNES HILL
THIS CROSS WAS RESTORED BY THE PARISHIONERS A. D. 1900

How interesting to see this message a rememberance of the wife of Edward Henry Hill of Broadwas Court.

The Worcester Chronicle - Saturday 1st December, 1900.

Memorial Cross at Broadwas.

An intersting service was held on saturday in the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene, Broadwas, on the dedication of the newly restored churchyard cross. The massive base of the old cross, with the remaining portion of the shaft, about three feet in length, has been placed on an extended base of threesteps. The shaft, which has been lengthened six feet, is surmounted by a handsome cusped cross, resting on a crown as capital of the shaft, giving a total height to the erection of over sixteen feet. the work is from the design of Mr. C. Hodgson Fowler, F.S.A. architect, of Durham, and has been admirably carried out by Mr. Brown, of Worcester. The cross has been restored mainly at the cost of the parishioners, in grateful memory of the late Mrs. E. H. Hill, of broadwas Court.
